The Department of Public Administration has just completed a two-day Induction Programme for new and continuing teachers at the Albena Lake-Hodge Comprehensive School and the six Primary Schools.

It was an impressive demonstration of caring love and support for young people in Anguilla when representatives of Government, school, church and community came together on August 29 to address first year students entering Campus B of the Albena Lake-Hodge Comprehensive School.

All primary school teachers in Anguilla convened at the Teachers’ Resource Centre Auditorium on Monday, September 1, at 3:30 pm to take part in the launching of a web-based resource called Educationcity.com. Although the software has been in use for the past school year, the Education Department is attempting to make a big push so that all teachers can benefit from the website. Ryan Lovell, one of the managers of Educationcity.com, made the opening remarks and presentation in which he gave a quick crash course on how innovative the software is and how useful it can be to teachers.

The Principal and Staff of St. Mary’s Pre-school invited The Anguillian to their graduation ceremony late last week amidst a series of end of year programmes held by all of the schools on the island.

On Wednesday June 18th at the morning assembly at Road School, the Anguilla Animal Rescue Foundation’s Education Chairman, Linda Gratton, accompanied by Vice President, Suzie Donahue, announced the winners of the 2008 Kathy Melby Memorial Education Project of the Year.

School leavers from the Fifth Form of the Albena Lake-Hodge Comprehensive School turned up on Wednesday June 25 in large numbers for the 2008 two-day Job Preparation Workshop at the House of Chandeliers.

American Eagle sponsored the Anguilla Day Inter-Primary School competition along with co-sponsor Comp Nation. Five Schools participated in the event and it was an exciting evening for all schools. The first place winner was Valley Primary School who did exceedingly well. Second place went to Stoney Ground Primary School and the third place prize was earned by the East End School.

Staff and students at the Island Harbour Primary School are now in possession of an all-in-one Cannon copier/printer and fax machine, thanks to a promise kept by the Festival De Noel Committee at East End.

One of the things the Caribbean Examination Council (CXC) is doing through its related SBAs (School Based Assessments) in Anguilla and the various other member states in the Caribbean, is bringing out the practical and latent talent of students in a number of subject areas, among them being arts and crafts.

At a ceremony held at the ECCB Agency Office at the Fairplay Commercial Complex on Tuesday March 4, monetary prizes were given to the winning schools of the Primary Schools Coin Drive. The ceremony was chaired by Marilyn Bartlett-Richardson and she gave welcoming remarks, “good afternoon all and welcome to the prize giving ceremony for the ECCB Primary Schools Coin Contest.

In her Speech Night report on December 6, Principal of the Albena Lake-Hodge Comprehensive School, Ingrid Lake, outlined a number of challenges and recommendations which, if addressed, can bring about a better school year in 2008.

Katrina Richardson was recently presented a generous scholarship from the International Studies Group.

The Caribbean Commercial Bank has been the biggest sponsor of the A.L.H.C.S Literary and Debating Society for a number of years and is proud to offer its sponsorship once again. This year the Bank has contributed EC$27,000 to assist with the promotion of the 2008 activities. Some of the funds will be used to help defray the cost of traveling to St. Kitts to participate in the Leeward Islands Literary and Debating Competition (LIDC).

As the public schools in Anguilla, in particular, are being provided with computers to develop their information technology skills, the Valley Primary School is taking a leading role in the use of the equipment.

The Health Authority of Anguilla has for the second time sponsored a quiz competition for students at the Albena Lake-Hodge Comprehensive School.

The Science Department of the Albena Lake-Hodge Comprehensive School is grateful to Heather Wallace, owner of Essentials Services business establishment, for the donation of a laptop and printer.

The Annual Caribbean School Regional Food and Nutrition Quiz Competition was held during the period 17th – 18th October 2007.

Some 67 Fifth Form students at the Albena Lake-Hodge Comprehensive School have graduated after five years of secondary education in Anguilla and they are either entering the world of work or going on to further their studies.

Almost 150 young persons registered for the National Youth Conference held at the House of Chandeliers on September 27-28. The slogan of the conference and principle idea was “Promoting Youth Involvement in Governance – The Future is Now.” The conference was primarily designed to serve as a mechanism to ensure that a youth perspective is mainstreamed into the development process.

“Better working conditions for teachers mean better learning conditions for learners,” President of the Anguilla Teachers Union, Leroy Hill, declared as he delivered a message on Monday, October 1, in observance of World Teachers’ Week.
