Do You Know?
There are plants and creatures living on Anguilla and we don't know their names! Please help us out. Use the reply form to let us know...and Thanks
Mexican Petunia
Ruellia brittoniana
Family: Acanthaceae (acanthus family)
Thanks to Linda Rampone we now know that these purple flowers are Mexican Petunias and originate in Mexico. They are easy growers and somehow survive in Anguilla despite the rather dry conditions here. They are considered an invasive species in Florida where they tend to take over swampy areas and push out the other local plants. In Anguilla they just fight for survival. If you have them in your yard, cut them back occasionally for better production. Butterflies love them.
Seed Bug
We found these bugs at Katouche Bay feasting on the seed pod of a Sea Maho.
Update:
Further research indicates that this bug really is a bug. It is a "true bug" and the closest relative we could find is the Seed Bug Hemiptera: Lygaeidae. It seems they can vary in size and color and enjoy feeding on the seeds of plants. Here they are doing just that.
Unknown citrus destroyer
These prehistoric looking insects are found on a lime tree and have infested all branches and leaves. They seem to be sucking the sap right out of the plant.
Unknown White Cedar invader
These insects are living on a cedar tree and seem to be in various stages of development or there are several different types inhabiting the leaves and branches at once.
