In making the announcement on Tuesday this week, NBA’s Business Development and Market Research Officer, Marisa Gumbs, said the joint events began in 2005 as part of the activities celebrating the 20th Anniversary of the Bank. The boat race is aimed at further assisting in promoting the national sport and the objective of the fun day events is to foster friendly rivalry among villages and to promote unity.

She said the events had so far attracted the overwhelming interest of the people and had been very successful – an incentive for having the third fun day activities again this year.

Andre Hall, Treasurer of the Boat Racing Committee, commended NBA for introducing the fun day activities. He was particularly delighted over the Peter Perkins Memorial Boat Race which not only honours someone who spent many years in the national sport, but further promotes it.

Romare Kelsick of the NBA Fun Day Organising Committee said that while the first fun day activities had attracted a large number of participants, the second year of events were even more competitive.

There were 12 boats in the Peter Perkins Race which was from Sandy Ground to Rendezvous Bay and back. The champion winner of the 2005 race was De Tree, the Blowing Point community-owned boat; and the trophy for the 2006 winner was Light & Peace.

There were eight teams in the fun day activities, representing fifteen villages.

There is much excitement at NBA and in the villages as plans continue for the 2007 Peter Perkins Memorial Boat Race and Fun Day activities.
